The best surface depends on the room. White screens favor neutral, broad reflection; gray screens can deepen perceived blacks; ALR screens add directional ambient-light control.

A good matte-white screen remains a strong baseline in a dedicated theater. If you can darken the space and control reflections, a neutral white surface can preserve wide viewing angles and avoid the directional behavior of ALR materials.
Gray screens reduce reflected light compared with a white reference surface. That can make blacks look deeper, but it also means the projector needs enough brightness to keep highlights lively. Gray is not automatically ALR; many gray surfaces still scatter ambient light broadly.
An ALR surface makes the most sense when you regularly watch with lamps on, blinds partially open or bright walls near the screen. The catch is that optical geometry matters. A directional screen needs to be paired with the projector throw and mounted correctly.
